Initially this reading takes the environmentalist (for lack of a better term) off their guard; I found the way that Cronan presented his approach to viewing the wilderness was a great way to provoke thought. Almost a counter-intuitive approach, initially he seems to be degrading our view of nature by pointing out flaws within the widespread concept of nature as divine or separate from humanity. At first it is a little disconcerting to follow his train of thought, he is playing devil’s advocate to how “environmentalists” view nature, and what obvious flaws exist in mass perspective. In the second half of the essay he gives his previous arguments a solid context and brings to light many issues surrounding the environmentalist mindset. Overall I found Cronan’s approach to be far more wholesome than the discussions usually initiated around the environment.
